As the long time residence of the university chancellor, this home was designed by acclaimed Milwaukee architect Alexander Eschweiler. The home's architectural heritage and beautiful lake shore setting were not adequate enticements for several new chancellors, causing the university to sell the property. Over the years the university had made attempts to modernize the home, including cosmetic renovations to the Kitchen. While the efforts were well intended, the changes did not properly respect Eschweiler's wonderful design. Some pieces of the original Kitchen did remain, and these were used as inspiration for the complete redesign and remodeling of the space.
